Support Local Latinx Agriculture & Volunteer with Adelante Mujeres' CSA Program this Summer

Summer is in full swing in Portland and we are loving it! At Levé, we've been taking advantage of some PNW sunshine with birthdays, beach days, and backyard barbecues. Recently, we also had the chance to volunteer with Adelante Mujeres, one of this year's nonprofit partners. We had such an amazing time visiting their facility in Forest Grove that we thought we'd shine a spotlight on this group and the programs they offer in the community.

Adelante Mujeres was founded in 2002 by Bridget Cooke and Sister Barbara Raymond, who felt that providing spaces to engage Latina women would support an important (and often overlooked) community in Washington County. Over the past 16 years, Adelante Mujeres has broadened its scope to serve Latinx families through microenterprise and education services.

We endeavor to strengthen Latino families as a whole because we believe a strong community requires the inclusion of everyone.

This mission takes many forms. Adelante Mujeres offers an array of programs for community members of all ages. From early childhood education to high school mentoring to small business development, Adelante Mujeres has established programs to empower kids, teens, and adults to thrive.

For the CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) program, Adelante Mujeres works with a distributor to buy produce from local farmers (who are also participants in their Sustainable Agriculture program). They combine the fresh produce from each farmer into CSA boxes for members each week.

Adelante Mujeres roots this program in the knowledge that sustainable practices support healthy communities, both by supporting Latinx farmers around Portland and encouraging community members to eat locally. If you're looking for ways to support local Latinx agriculture (and add some veggies to your pantry!), we definitely encourage you to sign up for the Adelante Salsa Share.

They're also looking for volunteers! Not only will you get to pack tons of Oregon produce, but you'll also meet some of the farmers who contribute to the shares each week. Plus, volunteers usually get to go home with some fresh goodies at the end! If this sounds like something you'd like to support, check out the volunteer details below:

CSA Packing Volunteers: CSA packing is always a lot of fun, especially if you enjoy practicing your Spanish and being around gorgeous produce!

  • When: Sundays & Wednesdays now through October 17th, 3 - 5:30pm or 5:30 - 8pm
  • Where: Forest Grove United Methodist Church (1726 St, Forest Grove, OR)

CSA Pick-Up Volunteers: Adelante is looking for one or two volunteers to help staff the pickup at New Seasons at Orenco Station. This will consist of checking members in and getting their shares from the back area for them. This is a great way to build customer service skills and learn how the CSA functions behind the scenes!
