They asked, and you voted. Now you have another chance to help Growing Gardens.
Throughout the month of July, Growing Gardens is seeking contributions to match a $10,000 Advantis Credit Union GROW Community Fund grant it was awarded in June. Growing Gardens was one of six nonprofit organizations to win a GROW grant, receiving the highest number of online votes of all 14 nonprofits vying for the grants during the June voting period.
Using a social media and email campaign, the support from the virtual community — and from partners’ supporters, such as Levé — overwhelmed Growing Gardens Executive Director David Greenberg.
“We had no idea we were going to win first place. … We touched a lot of hearts,” Greenberg says.
The GROW grant will benefit the Garden Tools for Schools program, enabling Growing Gardens to purchase garden tools and supplies for 800 children at seven local elementary schools. Greenberg says the outpouring of support his organization received from the community during the ACU contest prompted the idea of a secondary campaign, and will give supporters a way to support Growing Gardens’ home garden programs for families.
“We’re going back to the same people we reached out to and asked to vote, and asking them to help us match (the ACU grant),” Greenberg says.
The matching $10,000 will allow Growing Gardens to support more than 50 families by building organic gardens at their homes that will produce healthy food. Contributions made through July 31 will go toward the matching campaign, and can be made at www.growing-gardens.org and by choosing the Advantage GROW donation option.
Greenberg hopes longtime Growing Gardens backers, as well as new supporters, will show the same enthusiasm they displayed during the June ACU contest.
“It’s thrilling to win the grant, and sweet to finish in first place,” he says. “So many people in our network shared the (ACU voting) link on their Facebook page, and even people we never met before.”
