dfrntpigeon is a social enterprise apparel brand owned and operated by New Avenues for Youth (2015 Levé nonprofit partner) and run by Portland's marginalized youth. The art they make is inspired by their unique experiences and perspectives on the world. The unique business model helps youth develop their creative abilities into a career path through paid design work and mentorship from creatives in the local design community.
dfrntpigeon will be participating as a vendor in this years' Holiday Pop Up in Downtown Portland. dfrntpigeon will be selling a sales mix of apparel products and other gift items (mugs, soap, candles, etc.) 7 days a week starting the second week of November through Christmas Eve with store hours from 11am to 8pm daily. There will be a combination of New Avenues staff, seasonal support staff, youth, and volunteers running the shop -- interacting with customers about our products, ringing in sales, tracking inventory movement, and performing daily cash drops. Last year they were able to earn nearly $25k in cash revenue, provide paid wages to youth staffing the shop, and take advantage of the unique opportunity to feature the mission of New Avenues for Youth. They are looking for a couple different volunteer roles and time commitments:
1-2 Volunteer Retail Supervisor Volunteers (10-15 hours a week each during Pop Up Shop hours) starting the last week of October or first week of November to train and support with the build out of the retail space. Duties during build out of the space will include procuring and installing shop fixtures/decorations, moving in inventory, setting up the POS system, and coordinating event logistics with the host of the event. When the Pop Up is in full swing, duties will include being on an on-call list for other staff and volunteers working shifts to support with troubleshooting issues that arise and cover any shifts that aren't able to be filled by youth or New Avenues staff. This could also include back end tasks like analyzing sales and placing reorders of products. These volunteers would work closely with the Enterprise Director and youth Business Manager of dfrntpigeon.
2-3 Retail Support Volunteers (4-10 hours a week each during Pop Up Shop hours) to fill in staffing gaps and cover staff during meal breaks, and/or provide additional support during peak sales times.
People with enthusiasm and a desire to contribute in a fun way to our social mission would be a great fit, and folks with retail and customer service experience would be ideal!
